AGENDA

Keynote: "Failure Is Not an Option"
Gene Kranz, retired Director of NASA Mission Operations, will share his experiences as the lead flight director during the Apollo 13 space mission. You'll learn how leadership, discipline, trust and teamwork made the space program a stellar success.

Gene Kranz “Houston, we have a problem.”

A crisis had begun. The Apollo 13 spacecraft had been seriously damaged by an explosion on its way to the moon. Mission control soon realized that there was not going to be a lunar mission. The mission had become one of survival.

The Apollo 13 crisis pushed mission control to the brink of fear and doubt, but they refused to give in to these emotions or to succumb to panic. Instead, one of NASA's worst nightmares turned into a heroic event under the leadership of Gene Kranz. He inspired his team with the motto "failure is not an option" in a race against time and heavy odds to return the imperiled spacecraft and crew safely to earth.

“Teamwork Under a Crisis Is Spectacular”
Gene Kranz, Failure is Not an Option

When a design flaw in the heater circuit of the cryogenic tanks erupted into a crisis for Apollo 13, the “Tiger Team” responded quickly to troubleshoot problems throughout the awful uncertainty. Dashboards of early warning indicators and measurements guided the crew and ground teams. Fast decisions were driven by accurate and timely data. Each success created trust that ignited chemistry and a desire to openly share information. The team worked diligently toward a common goal of bringing their endangered colleagues safely home. Mission complete.
